BoE’s Andrew Bailey Nominated to Lead G20-Crypto Supervisor FSB

Bank of England (BoE) governor Andrew Bailey has been nominated to be the subsequent chair of the G20’s monetary overseer, the Financial Stability Board (FSB).

The FSB’s Nomination Committee agreed to advocate that Bailey tackle the function for a 3 12 months time period from the start of July, it stated in a statement on Monday.

The Group of Twenty (G20) tasked the FSB with coordinating the supply of a regulatory framework for crypto-assets. In July 2023, the FSB finalised its suggestions for the regulation of crypto-assets and world stablecoin preparations, “which have characteristics that may make threats to financial stability more acute,” the physique’s website said.

Bailey is at the moment chair of the FSB’s Standing Committee on Supervisory and Regulatory Cooperation. In this place Bailey oversaw the event of the FSB’s global regulatory framework for crypto-asset activities and the crypto-asset implementation roadmap.

“Andrew has a proven track record of fostering collaboration, having led recent key FSB reform initiatives, including on crypto-assets and non-bank financial intermediation,” Klaas Knot, President of De Nederlandsche Bank and Chair of the FSB, said in the statement. “This positions him well to guide the FSB forward, with a focus on ensuring the successful implementation of agreed reforms.” Knot’s time period as FSB chair will finish in June.

Since Bailey grew to become governor of the BoE in 2020, the central financial institution has led a number of crypto and digital work. The BoE is at the moment exploring a digital pound and is seeking to regulate stablecoins – tokens tied to different property – that would have an effect on monetary stability. Last 12 months it stated it could perform a sequence of central bank digital currency and distributed ledger experiments.
